Do I Need More Than One Car Seat Base? Here’s What to Know

Kyleyn Gosewisch

Congratulations on starting your car seat journey! For most families, the infant car seat is the go-to choice for bringing home a newborn—and it’s easy to see why. Infant car seats are simple to install, portable enough for everyday travel, and designed to click right into a stroller for extra convenience.

When you buy an infant car seat, you’ll only need one seat to begin with. Nearly all models include a base, making installation straightforward and allowing you to snap the seat in and out of your car with ease. Extra bases are also available for second cars, grandparents, or caregivers, making it effortless to move your baby from one vehicle to another.

In this blog, we will focus on the infant car seat base, the part that stays installed in your car. Let’s take a closer look.

Install

Most infant car seats come with a car seat base. The base is the part that actually gets installed in the car. The seat itself clicks in and out of the base, making it easy to carry your baby inside to load or unload, or connect the seat to a compatible stroller.

Bases can be installed using either the lower anchors with LATCH or the vehicle’s seatbelt. Both methods are equally safe, so the best option is whichever gives you the most secure fit in your car. If your base includes rigid LATCH, that is considered an advanced safety feature, and we recommend using it whenever possible.

Always take time to review your car seat manual and your vehicle manual to understand how your specific seat installs, since instructions can vary by model.

Why Consider an Extra Base?

Extra bases are especially useful for second cars, grandparents, or caregivers who regularly drive your baby. While you can safely install an infant car seat without a base, that method takes more time and practice. It is convenient for travel or ride shares, but for everyday use it can feel tedious and adds stress in making sure the seat is tightly secured each time.

With a base, things are much simpler. Once it is installed, you just click the car seat in and out, no extra steps required. Additional bases stay in place in each vehicle, ready whenever you need them. Remember, you only need one infant car seat itself. The golden rule is that the car seat always stays with your baby, whether they are at daycare, home, or with a caregiver. Anyone picking up your little one can then use the base already installed in their car.

Buying an extra base is an additional cost, but it can be well worth it for the convenience. Instead of reinstalling the base every time you switch cars, you’ll know each one is securely installed and ready to use. The good news is that bases are sold separately, so you only need to purchase one car seat and then as many bases as your family requires.

Safety Features

Not all infant car seat bases are the same. Some come with added safety features that can give you extra peace of mind. A load leg extends from the base to the floor of your car, reducing crash forces and seat rotation. An anti-rebound bar limits movement in a collision, and rigid LATCH creates an even more solid installation compared to flexible straps. These features are not required, but they can provide an extra layer of protection if available on your seat.

Travel and Convenience

There will be times when you may not have a base with you, such as on an airplane, in a taxi, or in a rideshare. Some infant car seats feature a belt path, allowing a baseless seat-belt installation. While it takes a little more time and practice, it is considered safe. Just practice beforehand so you're not stressed in the moment! For everyday use, though, having bases ready in your regular vehicles makes life much easier.

Compatibility Matters

It’s important to note that bases are not interchangeable across brands, and sometimes not even across different models within the same brand. Always make sure that any extra base you purchase is designed specifically for your infant car seat model. Double-check both the car seat and vehicle manuals to confirm compatibility or ask one of your Bambi Baby team specialists!

When You Don't Need An Extra Base

We don’t recommend a second base for urban-living families. If you live in the city, don’t own a vehicle, and primarily rely on public transportation or your stroller to get around, an extra base won’t be necessary.

What's Next?

Infant car seats are outgrown around a year old, so you will need to purchase a convertible car seat and booster seat following your initial infant car seat purchase. Or you can move to an All-In-One car seat that will be both convertible and booster in one. Just remember to keep your little one rear-facing for as long as possible. It's the safest way for them to travel!

FAQs About Extra Bases

How many extra bases do I need?

We recommend having a base pre-installed in every vehicle that will frequently transport baby.

Do I need an extra base for travel?

Most families traveling by plane leave their base at home and utilize baseless installation methods. However, if you do plan to take your base along, we recommend packing it in a padded travel bag for protection.

Is baseless installation safe?

Most infant car seats do feature a belt path for baseless, seat-belt installation. While this method is considered safe, utilizing an infant car seat base makes correct installation easier and reduces installation errors.

Should I add an extra infant car seat base to my registry?

Yes! Your baby registry is the perfect way to get the extra bases you will need. We highly recommend adding your infant car seat's extra base to your registry.

When should I buy an extra infant car seat base?

If your infant car seat base is not gifted off your registry, we recommend purchasing it before your baby is born. Plan ahead, so your extra bases are properly installed and checked before baby arrives.

Are car seat bases universal?

No, car seat bases are not universal. Base are both brand and model specific.

Can I buy a used infant car seat base second-hand?

We do not recommend purchasing second-hand or used infant car seat bases. Without knowledge of the bases history this is risky. If the base was installed in a vehicle during a collision the interior safety components may be compromised even if there are not visible signs of damage. Any base or car seat involved in an accident needs to be replaced. Purchasing second hand also means you won't have a warranty.

Do car seat bases expire?

Yes, car seats bases do have an expiration date. Always check the manufacturer label, especially if you do decide to purchase used or are passed down an extra base from a family member or trusted friend.
