Choosing the Right Crib for Your Family's Needs

Not seeing a crib here that fits your needs? We have you covered! Continue your crib research with these articles:

What to Know Before Buying a Crib

Romina Uptown Classic Crib

Plan ahead

While many families start with a bassinet, your baby will eventually need a crib. Even though that milestone might feel far away, it’s best to begin your crib research early, narrow down your options, and make your purchase before your little one arrives. High-quality cribs—especially those that are custom-made—can take up to 16 weeks to be delivered. Planning ahead saves stress and ensures your nursery is ready when baby comes home. Ordering early also gives you time to inspect your crib for damages or defects and resolve any issues before you need it.

Choose GREENGUARD Gold Certified

Babies spend a lot of time in their crib, so clean air and a safe environment matter. A GREENGUARD Gold Certified  crib helps ensure lower chemical emissions and a healthier nursery from day one. Not every crib carries this certification, so if you’re unsure, check with your retailer or the manufacturer directly.

Buy All Conversion Pieces Upfront

It may be tempting to wait to buy crib conversion kits (like toddler bed rails) until your child is older, but we strongly recommend purchasing them along with your crib—or adding them to your registry. Manufacturers often discontinue collections or finishes, and even if pieces are still available later, they may not perfectly match due to batch variations. Buying them upfront ensures you’ll have exactly what you need when the time comes.

Purchase Matching Nursery Furniture Together

The same goes for other nursery furniture—dressers, nightstands, chests, and more. If you want coordinating pieces, it’s best to purchase them at the same time as your crib. This avoids mismatched finishes or unavailable items down the road.

Expect Assembly

Cribs always require assembly. If you’re not comfortable putting it together yourself, look for a retailer that offers setup services or hire a professional. A properly assembled crib is critical for your baby’s safety. Store the instruction manual and extra parts in a safe place—you’ll likely need them later if you plan to convert the crib. If the manufacturer goes out of business, finding a replacement manual can be very difficult.

Skip the Extras in the Crib

As tempting as it may be to decorate with stuffed animals, blankets, or crib bumpers, your baby’s sleep space should be bare for safety reasons. Soft items pose a suffocation hazard. Stick with a snug-fitting crib sheet and age appropriate sleep sacks or swaddles.

FAQs About Cribs

Melo Caress Foldable V Leg Crib

Can I use a crib from birth?

Yes, a crib can be used from birth. However, it is highly recommended to opt for a bassinet for the newborn stage. A bedside bassinet keeps baby close by, reduces the risk of SIDS, and mimics the womb’s cozy environment, ensuring both optimal safety and comfort.

When is my baby ready for a crib?

Check your bassinet’s weight limits to know when your baby must transition. Beyond that, developmental milestones matter: once your baby is rolling or starting to push up, it’s no longer safe to use a bassinet. That’s the time to move to the crib.

What type of mattress should I buy?

A standard crib mattress must measure at least 27 ¼ inches wide by 51 ⅝ inches long and be no more than 6 inches thick. It should fit snugly in the crib with a firm surface for infants. If you’re buying a convertible crib, consider a dual-sided mattress—one firm side for infancy and one softer side for toddlerhood. Since your crib mattress will be used through multiple ages and stages, it’s worth investing in one that’s high-quality, Greenguard Gold Certified, and breathable. Inner-spring mattresses will better hold their shape over time, while foam filled mattress are lighter weight and offer easier sheet changes.

What height should I set my crib mattress at?

Cribs come with multiple mattress height options. For newborns, you can set the mattress at the highest level for easy access. As your baby begins lifting up or pulling or pushing up, lower the mattress to prevent falls. By the time your baby is standing (around one year old), the mattress should be at its lowest setting.

When should I convert my crib to a toddler bed?

Most children transition between 18 months and 2 years. If your child starts attempting escapes, it’s time to convert to a toddler bed or  purchase a new age appropriate sleep space.

Do all cribs pass the same safety testing?

Yes. All cribs sold in the U.S. must meet strict federal safety standards set by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). These regulations, updated in 2011, were designed to prevent accidents from issues like drop-side rails, which are now banned.

Here’s what’s required:

  • Third-party testing: Every crib must be tested by independent, CPSC-accredited labs.

  • Structural safety: Tests ensure mattress supports, slats, and hardware are strong and durable.

  • Chemical safety: Finishes and coatings are tested for harmful substances like lead.

  • Certification: Each crib must include a Children’s Product Certificate (CPC) confirming compliance.

Key crib safety standards:

  • No drop-side rails (banned in the U.S.).

  • Strong, durable mattress supports and slats.

  • Hardware designed to resist loosening over time.

  • Slats spaced no more than 2 ⅜ inches apart (about the width of a soda can) to prevent head entrapment.

  • Mattresses must fit snugly with no more than a two-finger gap.
