When should I remove the Nuna PIPA infant insert?

All Nuna PIPA models come with a low birth weight pillow, located inside the body support, but the instructions for removing the pillow or infant insert vary by model.For the PIPA Aire RX and PIPA Urbn models, you can remove the low birth weight pillow from a velcro-closed pouch on the backside of the insert when baby reaches 11 lbs. You'll then have the option to continue using the infant insert body support past 11 pounds as long as it helps improve your baby's comfort while buckled in.For the PIPA RX, the low birth weight pillow is sewn into the body support so isn't easily removed; for this model, you'll need to remove the entire body support insert when your baby reaches 11 lbs or otherwise is able to be snugly buckled into their car seat.

Which Nuna infant car seats can be installed without the base?

Nuna currently has a few infant car seat options that can be installed without the base using the vehicle's seat belt: the PIPA RX, PIPA Aire RX, PIPA Aire, and PIPA Urbn. The PIPA Urbn is a baseless car seat and installs with either the attached rigid latch or by the seat belt. You cannot install the discontinued Nuna PIPA Lite, PIPA Lite R, or PIPA Lite LX without the base due to their design.

The PIPA RX, PIPA Aire RX, PIPA Aire, and PIPA Urbn all use what is called the European belt path installation, where you will route the lap belt across baby's legs with the side belt paths, and the shoulder belt around back through the blue shoulder belt guide.

This is a helpful feature if you frequently fly or travel by taxi, since you can leave the base at home if needed and still safely secure the car seat in the vehicle or airplane! And if you live in the city or don't have a car, the PIPA Urbn may be perfect for you! It easily clicks in and out on the vehicles LATCH with the attached rigid latches.  However, all infant car seats that use a base come with a base that will stay in your own vehicle, saving time and effort by allowing you to easily click the car seat in and out.

Do all Nuna car seats use the same base?

All Nuna infant car seats (with the exception of the PIPA Urbn) can use the same two bases. Some models come with the standard Nuna base, and others come with the RELX base. The PIPA Urbn does not come with a base and cannot be used with one.

Discontinued models such as the PIPA, PIPA Lite, PIPA Lite R, PIPA Lite LX and PIPA Lite RX—work with both the standard and RELX base as well. 

Depending which Nuna car seat you choose, it will come with either the original PIPA base or the newer and more adjustable RELX base. 

The current Nuna PIPA models that will come with the RELX base are the PIPA RX and PIPA Aire RX. Any model with an "RX" at the end comes with the RELX base. Currently only the PIPA Aire comes with the original PIPA base. It is sold at select retailers only. 

When purchasing additional infant car seat bases separately for other vehicles, you can choose from either the PIPA or RELX base—no matter which base was included in the box originally with your car seat.

How do I travel with a Nuna PIPA Infant Car Seat?

If you are traveling with just your Nuna PIPA infant car seat and base, or want a travel bag for both your car seat and your Nuna stroller (since the Universal bag can't fit both a stroller and a car seat), the PIPA Series Travel Bag is a great choice as it's designed to secure the car seat and base in a smaller design that can be worn as a backpack.

Is the Nuna PIPA FAA approved?

Can you buy the Nuna PIPA without the base?

All versions of the Nuna PIPA—including the PIPA, PIPA RX, PIPA Lite, PIPA Lite R, PIPA Lite RX and PIPA Lite LX—come with a car seat base.

You can buy a Nuna PIPA urbn car seat without the base, as this is Nuna's only baseless infant car seat.

However, you can purchase additional car seat bases separately if you plan to use your PIPA series infant car seat in more than one vehicle and would like to have a base in each vehicle.

Can I purchase the Nuna PIPA urbn car seat separately?

The PIPA urbn is only available when purchased as a travel system with either the DEMI Next, MIXX Next, TRIV Next, TRVL, or TRVL lx. Is the Nuna PIPA machine washable?

Yes, the fabrics on the Nuna PIPA car seat are removable and machine washable. Nuna advises that parents wash the PIPA fabrics on a delicate cycle using cold water and a mild detergent, then allow the fabrics to drip dry until fully dry. Any parts made of metal, vinyl, or plastic should be wiped clean with a damp sponge or soft, non-abrasive cloth as needed, and to hand wash the harness system if needed using a mild soap and water then air drying the harness. It is important to avoid any harsh chemicals or cleaning materials that contain bleach to avoid damage or deterioration of these materials.

Can the Nuna PIPA face forward?

The Nuna PIPA is an infant car seat designed to be used in a rear-facing position only. It is not designed to be used in a forward-facing position. This is because rear-facing car seats provide better protection for young children in the event of a crash. It is recommended that children remain in a rear-facing car seat until they reach the highest weight or height allowed by the car seat manufacturer. Once a child outgrows their infant car seat, they can move on to a convertible car seat that can be used in both rear-facing and forward-facing positions.
