Bambi Baby: Is Your Toddler Ready for An Upgrade?
Your little one growing out of the crib is a major milestone! They are showing independence, growth, and curiosity that provide parents with a hint that they are ready to move on on their own! Upgrading from their crib to a toddler bed is a major step in their growth, and can be nerve wracking for parents. Here are a few signs that let parents know that their little one is ready for their big kid bed!
1. They're trying to climb out of their crib
If a baby is starting to get up and climb out of their crib, this is a first sign that they may be ready for their new bed. AAP recommends switching your little one out when they are 35 inches tall. Even with the mattress set at the lowest setting, if they are still trying to climb out, the crib can become dangerous for them. Your little escape artist is ready for their new bed!
2. They no longer fit in the crib
Obviously, if the crib is too small, it's time to make the switch to a toddler bed. Giving your little one more space to sleep not only provides a better night's sleep for them, but also offers safe sleep overall.
3. You’re potty training
Potty training is a difficult task on its own, and if your baby is waking in the night on their own to get uo to use the bathroom, obviously the crib will make that increasingly difficult. To allow for a better night sleep for your baby (and you as well), it is best to move them to a toddler bed when they are transitioning out of diapers as well.
4. They are asking for a “big kid bed”
Simple as this: If your little one is asking for a “big kid bed” it is most likely time to move them out of the crib and into their own bed. This is the sign that they are ready to move on to the next step. This can be a fun time as well, as you can allow them to choose their bed, their bedding, and where their bed goes.
5. Your little one is executing a sibling
For babies 18 months & up - if you are expecting another baby, this is a great time to transition your oldest to their “big kid” bed. They will connect that the crib is for little babies, and the bed is for big kids.
However, be prepared that the baby may not be ready yet. Some parents keep their little one in their crib until three years of age, while some parents transition their kids much earlier - between 15 and 18 months of age. Bottom line, listen to your instinct and your child. They will let you know when it is time. You also need to see how you as a parent feel. If your little one is over two, not potty trained, but is definitely a little adventurer, it may be in your best interest to keep the baby in the crib for as long as you like.
