Every Configuration of the Bugaboo Donkey Explained (Mono, Duo & Twin)

Every Configuration of the Bugaboo Donkey Explained (Mono, Duo & Twin)

Written By: Emily Gaylor - Mom | Baby Gear Expert for 15 years

One of the biggest reasons parents love the Bugaboo Donkey 6 is its flexibility. It’s not just a single stroller or a double. Its expandable frame can be configured for one child, siblings of different ages, or twins, then changed again as your family grows. In a world where baby gear seems to age out faster than your favorite newborn jammies, that kind of future-proofing really matters.

The confusing part isn't really the stroller. It's the names. Mono. Duo. Twin. Single. Double. 2-in-1. If you've spent any time trying to figure out which Donkey 6 you actually need, you've probably encountered all of them.

We're breaking down every Donkey 6 configuration, what you get with each one, and what you'll need if your family—and your stroller—grows.

First, Let’s Decode the Donkey Names

Bugaboo has changed some of its Donkey terminology over the years, which is why you’ll still see Mono and Duo used even though those names have disappeared from the current Donkey 6 product titles. Here’s the translation:

Donkey 6 2-in-1

Formerly Mono

Best for one child

Bassinet or toddler seat plus the side luggage basket.

Donkey 6 Double

Formerly Duo

Best for siblings

Bassinet + toddler seat or two toddler seats.

Donkey 6 Twin

Still Twin

Best for twins

Two bassinets, two toddler seats, or two compatible infant car seats.

How the Bugaboo Donkey 6 Converts

Watch Enelio, Bambi Baby owner, demonstrate how the Donkey 6 expands and converts between single, double, and twin configurations

The Donkey 6 is built around an expandable frame that widens side-to-side when you're ready to add a second rider. In its single configuration, the stroller stays narrower and uses that bonus space for its roomy side luggage basket (parenting involves so much stuff). When it's time to grow, the chassis slides open sideways to create room for a second seat or bassinet.

That's the clever part: you're not replacing your stroller, you're changing what it can do. The same chassis can take you from one child to two, then convert back to a single when you no longer need both seats.

Unlike most single-to-double strollers, which add a second seat above or below the first, the Donkey 6 expands side-to-side. That means both children ride next to each other, rather than in a stacked or tandem configuration.

If you're familiar with an earlier Donkey, the basic concept hasn't changed: the Donkey 6 still uses the expandable side-by-side chassis that can move between single, sibling, and twin configurations. What has changed are some of the names, materials, and design details. For a closer look at the updates, read our complete Bugaboo Donkey 6 review and comparison.

Bugaboo Donkey 6 for One Child

The Bugaboo Donkey 6 2-in-1 is the single-child version of the Donkey 6, formerly known as Mono. In this configuration, the chassis stays at its narrower width, with your child on one side and the Donkey's roomy side luggage basket on the other.

The 2-in-1 includes one seat frame that's used with both the bassinet and toddler seat fabrics, so the stroller transitions from newborn to toddler without requiring a separate seat frame.

But the real reason to choose the Donkey 6 over a conventional single stroller is what happens later. If you have one child now but expect you'll eventually need a double, you can start with the setup you need today and expand the same stroller when your family grows. There's no need to buy the Double configuration before you actually need it.

Our take: If you don't anticipate needing a double stroller, the Donkey 6 is a lot of stroller to buy solely for one child. But if a second rider is reasonably likely, starting with the 2-in-1 lets you get the Donkey's future flexibility without storing a second seat in your closet for the next two years. And in the meantime, that side luggage basket is extremely easy to get attached to.

What Can You Use With the Donkey 6 for One Kiddo?
  • Bassinet + side luggage basket for newborn strolls
  • Toddler seat + side luggage basket as your baby grows
  • Compatible infant car seat + side luggage basket with the appropriate Donkey 6 car seat adapter

Planning to use an infant car seat? The Donkey 6 can be used as a travel system with compatible infant car seats using the Bugaboo Donkey 6 single/double car seat adapter. We'll break down current car seat compatibility and the separate Twin adapter later in this guide.

Bugaboo Donkey 6 for Siblings

The Donkey 6 Double, formerly known as Duo, is the side-by-side configuration for two children, typically siblings of different ages. Although Bugaboo refers to this setup as the Donkey 6 Double, at Bambi Baby you'll build it by starting with the Donkey 6 2-in-1 and adding the Donkey 6 Sibling Seat.

To create the Double configuration, you'll need:

  • The Bugaboo Donkey 6 2-in-1, which includes the components for your first seating position
  • The Bugaboo Donkey 6 Sibling Seat, which adds the second seating position

Once expanded, the Donkey 6 can accommodate a bassinet and toddler seat or two toddler seats, depending on your children's ages. Unlike most convertible strollers, which add a second seat above, below, or behind the first, the Donkey 6 grows sideways. Both children ride next to each other at the same height, rather than in a stacked or tandem configuration.

That's more than an aesthetic difference. Both seats have the same weight capacity, recline independently, and can face you or the world. If your toddler suddenly develops a lot of opinions about where and how they'd like to ride, the Donkey 6 gives you options.

Our take: The equal seating positions are one of the Donkey 6's biggest advantages over a tandem convertible stroller. Neither child gets the short end of the stroller. The tradeoff is width: you'll gain a very capable side-by-side double, but you'll give up the narrower footprint of the 2-in-1 configuration.

What Can You Use With the Donkey 6 Double?
  • Bassinet + toddler seat for a newborn and older sibling
  • Two toddler seats for siblings who are both ready to ride seated
  • Infant car seat + toddler seat with the appropriate Donkey 6 car seat adapter

Bugaboo Donkey 6 for Twins

The Bugaboo Donkey 6 Twin is designed for two babies riding side by side from day one. Unlike the sibling configuration, where you're typically combining a bassinet or infant car seat with a toddler seat, Twin gives both babies the same setup at the same stage: two bassinets, two compatible infant car seats, and eventually two toddler seats.

For newborn twins, we'd generally choose the two-bassinet configuration for walks. It gives each baby a flat sleep space and lets you use the Donkey 6 as a true stroller from birth. Two compatible infant car seats are another option, and they're especially convenient for quick transfers from the car, but we wouldn't choose car seats as the default setup for longer walks.

To create the Twin configuration at Bambi Baby, you'll need:

  • The Bugaboo Donkey 6 2-in-1, which gives you the first bassinet/seat position
  • The Donkey 6 Sibling Seat, which adds the second seat frame and seating position
  • The Donkey 6 Twin Bassinet, which adds the fabrics needed to turn that second frame into a matching bassinet

Once both babies are ready for the toddler seats, those same two seat frames transition with them. You aren't buying another stroller, or another pair of seat frames, when the bassinets are outgrown.

Our take: The Donkey 6 makes an unusual amount of sense for twins because its biggest drawback as a convertible stroller, its width, becomes part of the appeal. Both babies get equivalent seating positions from newborn through toddlerhood, and neither twin eventually ends up in the smaller or less desirable "second" seat found on some convertible doubles. It's still a substantial stroller, but with twins, substantial comes with the territory.

What Can You Use With the Donkey 6 Twin?
  • Two bassinets for newborn twins
  • Two compatible infant car seats with the Donkey 6 Twin car seat adapter
  • Two toddler seats once both children are ready to ride seated

Bugaboo Donkey 6 Infant Car Seat Compatibility and Adapters

The Bugaboo Donkey 6 can become a travel system in any of its configurations, but the adapter you need depends on whether you're attaching one infant car seat or two. Thankfully, this part is considerably less complicated than the stroller names.

For a single infant car seat, including a Double setup with an infant car seat for one child and a toddler seat for the other, you'll need the Bugaboo Donkey 6 Single/Double Car Seat Adapter.

For twins riding in two infant car seats, you'll need the Bugaboo Donkey 6 Twin Car Seat Adapter, which allows you to attach two compatible infant car seats side by side.

Compatible infant car seats include select models from:

Car seat compatibility can vary by specific model, so if you're building a Donkey 6 travel system around a car seat you already own, it's worth confirming the exact combination before purchasing your adapter.

And one distinction that's easy to miss: Double doesn't automatically mean Twin adapter. If you're using one infant car seat alongside a toddler seat, you need the Single/Double adapter. The Twin adapter is only needed when you're attaching two infant car seats at the same time.

What It’s Really Like to Live With the Bugaboo Donkey 6

Let's address the elephant in the trunk: the Donkey 6 is a big stroller. It's surprisingly maneuverable for its size, but nobody is going to mistake it for a compact stroller, especially once you've expanded it for two children.

The good news is that Bugaboo has been very clever about where that size goes. Even in Double and Twin configurations, the Donkey 6 is designed to fit through standard doorways. The side-by-side design also distributes weight evenly, which is part of why the Donkey has such a famously good push even with two kids aboard. It feels considerably less unwieldy in motion than it looks standing still.

Your car may be another story. The Donkey 6 has a substantial folded footprint, and smaller trunks can require a little Tetris. Removing seats or other components can make loading easier, but if you're regularly lifting your stroller in and out of a compact car, we'd take some measurements before committing.

Where the Donkey 6 really earns its size is on walks. You get substantial storage, full-size seating for both children, and a sturdy side-by-side chassis that handles sidewalks, parks, and longer outings beautifully. If your stroller mostly lives in the garage and heads out for neighborhood walks, the size may barely register. If you're carrying it up three flights of stairs twice a day, you and the Donkey 6 may eventually have words.

That's really the Donkey 6 tradeoff: you get an exceptionally flexible single-to-double stroller, but you have to give it some physical space in return.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the Bugaboo Donkey 6 fit through standard doorways?

Yes. The Bugaboo Donkey 6 is designed to fit through standard doorways even when expanded into its Double or Twin configuration. That doesn't mean width disappears as a consideration, though. Tight elevators, narrow hallways, crowded stores, and older buildings can still require more maneuvering, so it's worth measuring any particularly unforgiving spaces you use every day.

What’s the difference between the Bugaboo Donkey 6 Double and Twin?

The Donkey 6 Double is typically configured for siblings of different ages, such as a newborn in a bassinet alongside an older child in a toddler seat. The Donkey 6 Twin gives two children at the same stage matching accommodations, starting with two bassinets for newborn twins and later transitioning to two toddler seats.

Can I convert the Bugaboo Donkey 6 into a double stroller later?

Yes, and that's one of the biggest reasons to choose the Donkey 6 in the first place. You can start with the Donkey 6 2-in-1 for one child and add the components needed for a second seating position later. When you no longer need two seats, you can collapse the chassis back to its narrower single configuration and bring back the side luggage basket.

Can I use infant car seats with the Bugaboo Donkey 6?

Yes. The Donkey 6 can accommodate one compatible infant car seat with the Single/Double Car Seat Adapter, or two compatible infant car seats with the Twin Car Seat Adapter. Compatible options include select infant seats from Nuna, Cybex, Maxi-Cosi, and Clek.

If you're using one infant car seat alongside a toddler seat, you still need the Single/Double Adapter, not the Twin adapter.

Is the Bugaboo Donkey 6 hard to push with two kids?

Surprisingly, no. Its size and its push are two very different things. The side-by-side design distributes weight evenly, and the Donkey 6 remains impressively maneuverable with two children aboard. You'll notice its size more when you're folding it, loading it into the car, or squeezing through tight indoor spaces than you will pushing it down the sidewalk.

How much storage does the Bugaboo Donkey 6 have?

The Donkey 6 has an underseat basket in every configuration, plus its signature side luggage basket when you're using the stroller for one child. And new for the Donkey 6, that storage doesn't disappear entirely when you expand for two: the side luggage basket can be removed and hung from the handlebar instead.

It holds up to 22 lbs in its usual side position or 8.8 lbs when hanging from the handlebar, so you can still keep essentials close even when the second seating position is occupied. Frankly, the side luggage basket has always been one of the pleasures of owning a Donkey. Bugaboo finding a way to keep it useful in Double and Twin configurations is a very welcome upgrade.

Can I use the Bugaboo Comfort Wheeled Board with the Donkey 6?

Yes. The Bugaboo Wheeled Board can give an older sibling a place to ride while younger siblings use the stroller seats, making it especially useful for families with twins plus an older child. Just keep in mind that a fully loaded Donkey 6 plus a rider on the board is very much the stroller equivalent of traveling with your entire delegation.
